Eugene, Ore. – At 8:12 a.m. on September 1, an EPD youth services officer was flagged down by a woman near Roosevelt Boulevard and North Cleveland Road. She’d had her rented U-Haul truck, a 2022 Chevy Silverado, and various items stolen by a male in his early teens that she had been helping. She reported the teen also had a CO2-powered airsoft gun (an airsoft gun often resembles a traditional firearm but shoots nonlethal, plastic pellets).

The youth services officer (previously known as ‘school resource officer’) was joined by another EPD officer and they looked for the vehicle. They were unable to locate it until they heard a call come in about a teen driving recklessly in a U-Haul pick-up (donuts in a parking lot, slamming on brakes, driving around parked cars) at South Eugene High School, 400 E. 19th Avenue. They responded to the location and found the vehicle with extensive damage. It was taken for safekeeping.

One of the officers spotted the teen but the teen ran from him. During this, the teen tossed an ‘airsoft gun’ in the area of 16th Avenue and High Street. An EPD community service officer responded to the area to collect the gun for safekeeping. The teen was not seen in the area, but an EPD downtown team officer spotted the teen around 11:29 a.m., at the Overpark at 1000 Oak. He was found under a car by the patrol sergeant and taken into custody at 11:43 a.m.

Charges will include Harassment Aggravated, Hit and Run, Interfering with a Police Officer, Reckless Driving, Unauthorized Use Vehicle.

Case 22-13226 and 22-13235
